Making waves in the Channel

SNS UK finds out more about the companies that will appear at Storage Expo. Here we highlight Huawei Symantec Technologies Ltd, including the background to the joint venture, expectations for this partnership, and what storage solutions they bring to the enterprise.

Date: 1 Oct 2009

Huawei Symantec Background

The Huawei Symantec joint venture was announced in May 2007 and officially established on February 5th, 2008.  Huawei and Symantec established this partnership to develop and distribute world-leading security and storage appliances to the enterprise market.  With the growing number of connections across IP networks and IT systems, it is increasingly important to balance performance and availability requirements with system security and data integrity.  The joint venture is helping enterprises effectively address these challenges by offering network security and storage solutions that are easy to implement and that will maximise the return on investment (ROI).

Huawei Symantec is in a unique position compared to its competitors because it can leverage the complementary strengths of its parent companies – leaders in their respective fields – telecoms network infrastructure (Huawei), and also security and storage software (Symantec) – to provide world-class network security and storage solutions to the enterprise.  It is an ideal partnership because Huawei Symantec can tap into the customer base, backing, and expertise of both parent companies to enable Huawei Symantec to provide far more effective and efficient solutions for their customers.

Huawei Symantec is headquartered in Chengdu, China.  Huawei owns 51 percent of the joint venture with Symantec owning 49 percent.  With more than 130 service branches around the world, Huawei Symantec is able to fully support the needs of their global partners.

The Parent Companies behind Huawei Symantec

Huawei Technologies is a world-leading telecom network solutions provider focused on building long-term partnerships with telecom operators.  The company, headquartered in Shenzhen, China is dedicated to providing innovative and customised products, services and solutions to create long-term value and potential growth for its customers.  Huawei's products and solutions are deployed in over 100 countries and serve 36 of the world's top 50 operators, as well as more than one billion users worldwide.  In 2008, Huawei recorded USD23.3 billion in contract orders, 75 percent generated from international markets.

Symantec is a global leader in infrastructure software, enabling businesses and consumers to have confidence in a connected world.  The company helps customers protect their infrastructure, information and interactions by delivering software and services that address risks to security, availability, compliance and performance.  Headquartered in Cupertino, California, Symantec has operations in 40 countries.

Reasons Behind the Joint Venture

The Huawei Symantec joint venture has been driven by innovation and the need to develop new solutions and to keep pace with the evolving risks and increased availability requirements facing enterprise customers.  Addressing the increased industry demand for more innovative and streamlined solutions is what both parent companies are aiming to achieve from this joint venture.  Huawei's world-class telecommunications networking product development and manufacturing capabilities coupled with Symantec's leading edge security and storage software enable Huawei Symantec to offer the unique and innovative solutions that the industry is seeking to revolutionise and secure their systems.

Huawei Symantec not only provides enterprise customers with network security and storage solutions, but also provides an all-inclusive consulting service covering risk assessment, system construction, operation and maintenance, business continuity, emergency response, and regulatory compliance.

Huawei Symantec's Presence in the UK and Europe

Huawei Symantec started partnerships and channel development in the UK and Europe earlier this year.  "This is an exciting time for Huawei Symantec.  Throughout Europe and here in the UK we are bringing our innovative security and storage solutions to enterprise customers who are looking to partner with one of the most dynamic storage vendors in the industry today.  UK enterprises know what they want, and we will do our best to meet their demands and expectations as a true partner," says Ken Ingram, Managing Director, UK & Ireland, Huawei Symantec.

Huawei Symantec's Future Strategy for the UK and Europe

Huawei Symantec will continue to introduce its innovative network security and storage solutions into the UK and Europe through distribution partners.  Growing its network of partners over time will give the company wider access to the value-added reseller marketplace.

Further geographic expansion in Europe for Huawei Symantec will occur over time and in line with market opportunities and business growth.

Huawei Symantec's Value Proposition to Channel Partners

The value proposition of Huawei Symantec for the channel is undoubtedly the company's ability to leverage the complementary strengths of its parent companies.  Huawei Symantec is an enterprise business and the company's success will be dependent on the channel.  The company can also leverage the customer and partner relationships of both Huawei and Symantec.

Huawei Symantec's Value Proposition to Storage End Users

The enhanced and efficient network security and storage solutions provided by Huawei Symantec to enterprise customers benefit consumers who can secure superior technologies and services at more affordable prices.  Huawei Symantec also has the ability to be flexible and to react to customer needs and the ever-changing requirements of the storage industry.  In addition, the use of licensed technology of Symantec enables Huawei Symantec to develop more leading edge solutions for enterprises.

Huawei Symantec's Solutions to Current Storage Needs in the Enterprise

Huawei Symantec understands the growing need for high performance systems and networks as balanced by system availability and data integrity.  Huawei Symantec's products and services serve the evolving needs of enterprise customers who in turn are being driven by the needs of end users.

a) Virtualisation

Huawei Symantec offers a number of leading storage virtualisation products that can meet the requirements of integrating hierarchical storage devices, simplifying management, and constructing multi-level disaster recovery systems. Huawei Symantec product solutions enable the implementation of uniform management, data transfer, and data protection.

For example, Huawei Symantec's OceanStor™ VIS6000 series allows for the integration of hierarchical storage devices.  The total OPEX is decreased by using centralised deployment.  Hierarchical virtual snapshotting can easily be achieved.  The advanced architecture design of the VIS6000 series ensures the flexibility, reliability and scalability of the hardware.  Multiple links are available for load balancing and fault failover.

b) Tiering/Data Management

Huawei Symantec offers a comprehensive data protection solution, including products such as the OceanStor™ backup and disaster recovery solution and the OceanStor™ VTL3000 Series Virtual Tape Library System.

The OceanStor™ backup and disaster recovery product integrates the data protection software of Symantec with the storage arrays of Huawei Symantec to deliver a practical application of environmental, readily available, and comprehensive data backup and disaster recovery solutions for customers.  It provides complete, end-to-end data lifecycle management.

Meanwhile, the OceanStor™ VTL3000 Series Virtual Tape Library System provides superior performance, seamless deployment, multi-point disaster recovery, automatic filing and convenient management and maintenance.

c) Convergence

The threats facing Internet service providers are changing from pure network risks to network and content combined risks.  In addition, threats are transmitted at a faster pace through more extensive channels, generating greater impact. Therefore, security must be full-proof for network applications.

In response to the growing security challenges, Huawei Symantec has built a deep defense system and DDoS attack protection system for IT security based on the company's proactive defense and reputation evaluation system.  New solutions like the USG2000 series and USG5000 series use a unified security management platform to ensure security policy consistency and collaboration, while streamlining the management process, boosting management efficiency, and saving management costs.

Huawei Symantec is dedicated to keeping pace with technological progress trends and building an overall security system from network to application and service.  By meeting the customer's personalised security demand, it provides guidance for Internet service providers to sustain growth.

d) Cloud computing

Huawei Symantec's OceanStor™ T3000 series are among the most advanced storage node devices in the industry.  Designed for distributive storage systems and cloud storage services, it provides significant energy-savings as well as a more open and simplified system management than other products on the market.  The OceanStor™ T3000 can be combined with a distributive system which substantially decreases total cost of ownership for users and is the first product of its kind to achieve an S3 standby hibernating storage mode in the industry, which decreases energy costs even further.  It is also the first open system in the industry.

e) Data storage

Huawei Symantec has particular strengths in the data storage sector.  Based on cutting edge technology and modular design, the OceanStor™ N8000 Clustered NAS System provides a professional integrated storage solution for Huawei Symantec customers and makes high utilisation of storage resources.  Similarly, the OceanStor™ S2600 storage system provides economical storage solutions and effective data protection for small and medium enterprises. The S2600 will be showcased at Storage Expo (14-15 Oct 2009), Booth 310.
